Guttenberg, Iowa, is a beautiful, tiny (fewer than 2,000 people) historic town on the Mississippi River. It is also very meaningful to me because some of my ancestors settled there after migrating from Switzerland; I still have some distant cousins who live there.

My main purpose for going there was to find the cemetery where my maternal great-grandparents are buried. Through a lot of research and phone calls, I finally located the cemetery and my great-grandparents' headstone, along with the headstones of a few other related ancestors. For a genealogist, that's very exciting!

We drove to the historic area of the town for lunch and were surprised to discover that the insurance and real estate office owned by two of my second cousins is across the street from the restaurant! I was hesitant to go in at first, but Fred coaxed me into it and I'm glad we did! I felt welcomed and learned a little more about the family history, and was told there is another second cousin who is very knowledgeable about and interested in the family history. I will write to her when we get home and find out what more she can tell me about my formerly elusive ancestors!

The scenery from Guttenberg includes bluffs and grassy hills along the Mississippi River. It is believed that my great-grandparents settled there because it reminded them of their home in Switzerland. Now to the photos.

The photo of the painting of L. A. Tujetsch Grocery store (below) is currently hanging in the insurance and real estate office that belongs to my second cousins. Their office is built on the same site where the grocery store was for many years and was built after the store burned down. The owner, Lawrence Tujetsch, was my grand uncle--my maternal grandmother's brother.
